This beautiful campground located in St. Regis, MT makes for a great 1-2 day stop as part of a longer journey, or as a destination for a longer stay. We will definitely stay here again if we are passing through the area.
Getting to the campground is pretty easy, just a simple turn off of I-90, then one more turn to the east on old highway 10. After going across the bridge and up the hill, the campground entrance is on the left. When we arrived, the friendly and helpful staff was just outside the camp store, guiding us through check-in and to our campsite. They even offered to help us hook up. Super friendly people.
The internal roads are easy enough to navigate, even with our big rig, and we didn’t have to disconnect the Jeep to make it safely to our campsite. The internal roads are gravel, as are the individual sites. We opted for one of the premium sites, which are at the back of the campground, on top of the hill. The site was pretty level, and had plenty of room and great views.
There are lots of hiking trails back through the woods, but be careful! This is Montana, and there is lots of wildlife out there, including bears. We took a walk on a couple of the trails, checking out the local bird life. The trails are maintained but are natural. This means you won’t find bridges, boardwalks, etc. So bring some good shoes and watch out for mud.
Connectivity
We couldn’t find any wifi here, but our phones grabbed a good enough signal (3-4 bars on Verizon) so we could send and receive emails and browse the web and social media. Using one of the phones for a hotspot allowed us to use the laptop with no problems. No cable TV is available, and OTA television was non-existent, so bring some DVDs.
Facilities
As mentioned above, this is a beautiful campground. Everything is clean and well-maintained, and the staff are welcoming and friendly. The pool seemed to be clean and good repair, and the camp store had a small selection of essentials that you might need during your stay. The power was clean and steady, and the water pressure at our site was just right. We didn’t use the sewer connection though, but it seemed to be in a good state, and not buried in the ground or too high off the ground. This is a kid and pet friendly campground, but we never heard or saw any ill-behaved progeny. The loudest thing we heard was the lady across the way yelling into her cell phone, we only heard that because we were outside.
Our site was very level, and we didn’t have any problems with sinkage or sliding. Our jacks were mainly used as stabilizers, since the site was so level.
Amenities
For an “out-of-the-way” campground, there is a good collection of amenities at the Nugget. We didn’t make any use of the Amenities, so I can’t speak to their quality or fitness for purpose. Like I mentioned, store seemed to be stocked with some essentials, and all things visible around the campground appeared to be in good shape.
