For our spring shakedown trip this year, we didn't go far. Located about 50 miles from home base, the Port of Skagit Marine & RV campground was a good opportunity to exercise the Grizz a bit, and enjoy a long weekend away.
Located a bit north of downtown La Conner, and fifteen minutes south of highway 20, the campground is easy to get to, and we had no problem parking our rig. The individual sites are a mix of gravel and asphalt, but all appear to be level and lengthy. We stayed in one of the pull-through sites at the front of the campground, and it easily fit both the motorhome and our Jeep, with about six feet to spare.
La Conner is a charming and historic town, in the Skagit Valley of Washington state, and is a short 10-15 minute walk from the campground. The town offers museums, many and varied dining options, as well as the typical small town shopping options. Be sure to take a walk on the channel boardwalk. Nearby, you'll found the famous tulip farms of La Conner and Mount Vernon. In the spring, the valley is set ablaze by an explosion of color, owing to the seemingly endless fields of tulips and daffodils that are grown here for export all over the world.
Being near Whidbey Island, you might get the opportunity to see some US Navy jets flying over. The naval base on the island is where fighter pilots practice and get certified to perform carrier landings, and I think the park is on the east part of their approach pattern. Noise is not bad, and we didn't hear anything inside our rig.
Connectivity
Bring your own. The wifi system in use seems to be newer, however, the free option (we didn't try the paid option) is just fast enough to the very basic of email checking. Speeds were less than 1mbps, even though there is an access point right next to our rig. Cellular reception with Verizon 4G/LTE was a strong 4-5 bars, Rather than attempt using the park wifi, we used our cell phone as a mobile hotspot, with good results. Verizon speed tests were around 5.5mbps, downloading and uploading.
Others have reported higher speeds with Verizon, though. It was very windy while we were at the campground, so maybe one of the Verizon towers was having problems? The speeds kept us happy and productive while we were here, though.
Facilities
All sites appear to be 50/30/20 amp, with water and sewer included. On the pull through sites, there is a metal picnic table and a fire ring, situated in a strip of grass on the curbside. The site itself is a good width, providing a nominal amount of spacing. The regular back-in sites are a little tighter, and don't include the fire ring or table. The premium back-in sites are more spacious, and contain the same picnic tables and fire rings as the pull-through spaces.
Summary
With a good location, with lots to do nearby, this campground is a good, off-the-path destination for a night, weekend, or a longer stay. The cost vs. value, in my opinion is good.
